“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14
Last week our discussion centered on the abundance of life. Such a reality only becomes a possibility through the One Way, Truth, and Life. Have you ever tried to get behind this truth – this fact of Jesus being the One Way?
Sit back and let me tell you a tale – it is a tale that will stretch the contours of your mind’s eye while it presses in on the depths of your being. It is a tale about a baby who was born to die. No exaggeration. This baby was born so that those who would beat him as a man would not be punished for their wrongdoing. The baby grows into a man, seeks to teach those around him about living life to its fullest and they kill him for it. What’s more is that this man dies, is buried, and then three days later rises from the grave.
We hear the aforementioned and nod – oh, you mean the tale of Christmas and Easter. But have you ever thought of how ridiculous this tale is? A baby born specifically to die for his enemies? Not only that, the baby’s mother claims to never of had relations with the boy’s father! This is the tale, the myth, the story that we tell the world.
This is the tale we are expected to believe. It is a story, a drama that hinges on the two pillars of birth and death. A baby born from a teenage virgin who, when he becomes a man, says such offensive things that the people beat the crap out of him and then bury him in a cave. Three days later this dude is said to come back to life. And the grand finale…He is going to come back to gather up all those who have not simply believed this tale, but have actually lived it out with such intensity that they have sought to change the world with their thoughts, words and deeds. Yeah, you can’t make this stuff up.
If I told you I wanted you to come and wait with me for three days next to the grave of my uncle you would think I was probably in shock due to his death. But if I then told you the reason was because in three days my uncle was coming back to life, you would think I was crazy.
What needs to happen for Christians today is for the craziness of the Christmas miracle to infect us once again. What happened some 2000 years ago changed the course of history. God became flesh – Immanuel, God with us.
As we journey through this second week of our devotions, stop and take to heart what is being said – what the reality of Christmas is – God so loves you that He gave His only Son to die for you. In that manger and on that cross – Jesus was thinking of you
